There are many members in a family and each has a rich, wonderful history. The challenge is to locate the stories and information on the members that make up the family.
Tools of the Trade include Lineage Charts, Group Sheets, census forms, logs, and transcript and abstract sheets. The Lineage Chart is your road map to your direct ancestors. For each couple on the lineage chart use a Group Sheet to record more information about the make up of your ancestor’s family.
Free charts and forms can be found Here
Federal Census Records have been taken every ten years since 1790. States have often taken a census when their need arose. The Federal Census between 1790 and 1840 are head counts that list the name of the head of the household and numbers of people in the household by age. After the 1840 census, more information is given about each member of the household.
Military and Pension Records often provide a wealth of information. Draft Registration Cards for World War I and World War II have additional information about your ancestor. Fold3 is a resource but it is by subscription.
Marriage Records can include consent letters, licenses and bonds, and ministers’ returns.
Obituary Records are a record of a person’s death published in newspapers and other publications. GenealogyBank is a resource but it is by subscription.
